Devo Racing Results 11 May 2007

Spring season success continued for the Fulton Flyers in April and early May.  Spring is criterium madness in the southeast, as you can see in our race reports below.  The Flyers had great results in most of the events.  Our young ladies scored two victories, with Jackie Soladay and Rose Mauney taking first wins for 2007 – both on Blue RC4, SRAM DoubleTap and Panaracer Extreme tires!

Dilworth Criterium – May 5 – the only Devo rider in this Charlotte, NC event, Rose Mauney rode aggressively to her first win this year.  Grabbing a mid-race prime with an attack on the finishing climb, Rose repeated this move on the final lap to power away for victory. This race is famous for its very sharp final turn, and this year was combined with wet roads from morning rain.  Rose’s Blue RC4 equipped with Panaracer Extreme tires and Neuvation R28 Aero wheels hooked up perfectly and kept her in good position throughout the race.  Victory 2 on SRAM DoubleTap!

Anniston Sunny King Criterium – May 5 – Jackie Soladay raced hard in this night time event to place third in Women 3/4, with Gillis Rowston in 10th.  The girls rode Blue RC4 and RC5 with  Panaracer Extreme tires to take on this very tight course.

Historic Roswell Criterium – April 29 – Ann Turner was back in action for the women’s team, and lead the girls with a hard fought 2nd place, with Gillis Rowston in 9th, Jackie Soladay 11th and Rose Mauney 18th.  Ann’s Panaracer Extreme tires and Neuvation R28 Aero wheels were the perfect combination for this challenging course.  In the Cat 2/3 event, Oscar Clark gave the perfect leadout to put Ty Magner into 4th – this would have been a victory if our guys were not riding their “restricted” junior gears.  In the Junior race Dylan DeGan showed great tenacity in staying with the group despite repeated attacks, to finished with a strong sprint to 7th.   Brian Ceballos sprinted to 9th in Cat ¾ men.  In Junior 10-14 Sean Cochran covered the early moves to take 4th.

Twilight Criterium – April 28 – Devo had the rare opportunity to race against a large group of juniors, and Brian Ceballos sprinted to third, followed by Oscar Clark 8th,  Kyle Cochran 11th, and Everett Lindner 28th – his first ever Criterium!  In Women Cat ¾ Devo Women rode aggressively, with Jackie Soladay 8th, Rose Mauney 11th, Gillis Rowston 17th and Alex Wechsler 20th.  Thom Shaffer placed 28th in a very aggressive Cat 3 race.  In the Saturday afternoon “finals” race Ty Magner rode to 10th in an exciting field of Cat 2,3,4 men.

Susan G. Komen Criterium  – April 16 – this women’s only race preceded the Tour de Georgia Stage 1 finish in Macon.  Four Devo women lined up with a 30 woman Cat ¾ field in front of a huge crowd.  With two laps to go and one woman away, Ann Turner jumped away for second as her teammates covered the field.  The team finished well in the field - Rose Mauney 15th, Jackie Soladay 17th and Gillis Rowston 18th.  All of them on Blue Competition Cycles!

Raccoon Mountain – April 15 – a mid-race two mile climb and a one mile finishing climb shape this race.  The day opened with Christian Parrett’s fine 15th in his first Pro-1-2 event, and Thom Shaffer in 7th in Cat 3.  Our Junior Men showed promise with Everett Lindner showing climbing prowess to take 15th and Dylan DeGan 19th.  Sean Cochran fought it out in the Jr 10-14 to take second.  In Women Cat 4 Rose Mauney and Gillis Rowston rode hard on their Neuvation R28 wheels up front to sprint to 5th and 6th respectively, with Alex Wechsler in 15th.  The girls handled the wet roads in spectacular fashion on Panaracer Extreme tires, and Blue RC4 and RC5 bikes.

Barber Motorsports “Live to Ride” Circuit Race – April 7 - the only Devo rider in this Birmingham, AL event, Jackie Soladay rode aggressively to her first win this year.  Covering the opening attacks, she tackled this undulating course to power away for the victory in the final sprint.  Jackie scorched the turns on her Blue RC4 with a fresh set of Panaracer Extreme tires.

Perry-Roubaix – March 31/April 1 - named after the Queen of the Classics, Paris-Roubaix, this road race travels over rough pavement mixed with dirt and gravel sections.  Our two riders in this grueling event showed true class in Mens Cat 3, with Christian Parrett riding away solo to win, and Oscar Clark controlling the group and still placing 7th.

4-7-07 Jackie Soladay wins Birmingham Circuit race Cat 1-2-3 on Barber Motor Speedway - her first race with SRAM DoubleTap!

4-1-07  Christian wins Perry-Roubaix TT & RR!  Oscar 7th RR, 8th TT, 9th Circuit & Overall!  Ann wins Auburn collegiate criterium!

3-28-07 Georgia State Single Speed Championships Report by Everett Lindner posted HERE - a good read!

Gainesville, GA, March 24/25 – Men:  March 24 & 25 -Round 2 of the Georgia Cup and more Devo success!  In Elites, Christian Parrett knocked down the doors in the opening 7 mile Time Trial, setting a winning pace that would have placed him third in the Pro category!  Ty Magner and Oscar Clark were within a minute of this, making us the team to watch.  Ty unfortunately crashed out in the Saturday night Criterium as Christian defended his lead and Oscar stormed to 4th.  Brian Ceballos and Kyle Cochran added support in keeping other teams in check in this very fast nighttime event.

Sunday’s 50 mile road race presented a 9% one mile climb – the Mayberry Wall.  While our competitors saw this as an obstacle, the Land Rover – The BriarRose boys saw it as an opportunity.  Splitting the group several times, Christian grabbed King of Mountain (KOM) points like the proverbial candy from a baby while Thom Shaffer, Kyle Cochran and Oscar marked the field.

On the final ascent of the climb Thom Shaffer kicked the afterburners leaving the field gasping.  With no competitors capable of responding, Christian gave Oscar (the “O.C.”) the secret lead-out sign and set a final kilometer pace only Oscar could hold.  With 200 meters to the O.C. made the final kick to make it 1-2 for Devo!

Our boys in Competitive showed great progress.  Sean Cochran and Dylan DeGan held on to screaming field in the Criterium and followed up with strong rides in the Road Race.

Gainesville, GA, March 24/25 – Women:   As 2006 U23 National Road Race Silver Medalist and a force in southeastern collegiate racing, Ann Turner faced her first strong field of Georgia Cup Pro-Am women.  Second in the Time Trial and 4th in the Criterium, Ann was living up to her billing, with the showcase road race still to come.  Team support came from Jackie Soladay and Gillis Rowston, as well our two national caliber 16 year olds Alex Wechsler and Rose Mauney.

Sunday’s road race featured the Mayberry Wall, a one mile climb of 9%.  Time bonuses and Queen of Mountain points at the top would dole out major pain.  First lap aggression shaped the race with the overall race leader powering away on Mayberry.  Only three women held her wheel – including Ann!

The four leaders were quickly heads down and full gas.  With one rider per team in the break the chase was thwarted as the lead grew to 3 minutes over the next 30 miles.  At the end Ann showed dominant power to take the win and Queen of Mountain!

Our women showed tenacity, finishing well.  Rose and Jackie placed 13th and 15th respectively overall.  Gillis and Alex were top 20 in the road race.

Albany, GA, March 3/4 – Men: With the spring season underway the Land Rover – The BriarRose – Fulton Flyers Development Team found early success.  The Georgia Cup is a season long target, and our Junior Men scored our first victory at the Albany (GA) round.  Riding Elite (Cat 3) category, new addition Christian Parrett covered rivals moves as Ty Magner picked up 2007 where he left off last fall – winning both the Prologue Time Trial and Criterium.

With the Georgia Cup events now true stage races based on cumulative time, Ty finished with his main rivals in the road race to take the overall victory, with Christian 12th overall.

Albany, GA, March 3/4 – Women: Jackie Soladay stormed to 4th in the Prologue and Road Race in the Pro Women event.  Due to a mechanical in the Criterium she ended the overall in 11th.

GA Cross Round 5 - Marietta
Another good day for the team.  Kyle Cochran 1st Juniors & 23rd B Men, Oscar Clark 5th Elite, Coach Lamar Mauney 5th Masters 45+.  New recruits for 2007 also had great rides - Christian Parrett 6th Elite & Daniel Stallings 1st Men C.

With a narrow paved section for the start, Oscar was third row on the grid.  Making up ground quickly, he still missed the winning break in lap one.  A day of full-gas riding ensued, and he and future teammate Christian moved to within 20 seconds of the front when the closing salvos were fired.

Very good for two 17 year olds!  With Michael Cumming of our affiliate Cycle Youth mtb team taking 2nd, Juniors took three of the top 6 spots in the Elite race.  Wow!

GA Cross #4 - Monroe Nov 5

A beautiful fall day greeted round four of the Georgia Cross Series in Monroe, GA.  The Fulton Flyers entered four riders over four events.

Oscar “The O.C.” Clark and Ty “Tiger” Magner finished with the front group, which had seen former National Collegiate champion Jed Schneider solo off as in Augusta two weeks prior.  The field diced and sliced, shedding riders as small attack groups formed and dissipated.  As the group took the bell, former MTB National Champion Michael Cumming attacked hard, forcing gaps in the group as it become every man for themselves.

Oscar and Ty held good positions and sprinted in for 4th and 7th place respectively.  Oscar is showing great form, and will race Elite Juniors at the upcoming Cyclo-Cross Nationals – the first Devo Flyer to do so.

Kyle Cochran won Juniors A with a strong attack mid-race.  After taking a 10 minute rest he was back on course for Men B, which was quickly ravaged by Georgia mountain bike legend Greg Turner (who arrived late and missed the Masters 45+ race).  With the Junior race still in his legs, Kyle could not react to fast start, but recovered to a solid 20th place.

Coach Lamar Mauney took 3rd in Masters 45+, and thanked Greg Turner for arriving late (Greg is father to Fulton Flyer Devo and U23 Road Nationals Silver Medalist, Ann Turner).

Ft Yargo State Park - GA Cross #3

29 October 2006

A beautiful fall day hosted the third round of the Georgia Cross Series, held in historic Fort Yargo State Park.  The park was a perfect setting for this athletic event, with two paved sections mixed intermixed with grass, dirt and a 150 feet of deep lake front beach sand.  The northern Georgia location attracted a significant number of talented NC and SC riders.

With school fall break, our team again fielded a smaller squad.  Flyers entered four riders over four events on their Blue Competition Cycles CX bikes, Panaracer Cross Blaster tires & Neuvation wheels.  As usual our equipment performed perfectly and all riders finished without incident – except for a few exciting moments and non-critical crashes common in cyclo-cross.

Ty “Tiger” Magner finished his first cross race, placing an outstanding 8th in the Elite event dominated by ex-MTB National Champion Michael Cumming.  Team mainstay Oscar Clark made the front group as expected, but dropped back to 14th place after struggling with stomach problems.  We are looking forward to these two junior riders being in the mix again next weekend.

Kyle Cochran won Juniors A with a strong attack at the bell lap, and held on for the win again.  With only a 10 minute rest he was back on the course for Men B, and made the front group in the early going.  Unable to dodge a fallen rider entering the beach, Kyle took a fall and long slide before recovering to 21st place.  Lamar Mauney rode up front in Masters 45+ to 5th.

GA Cross 2 - Augusta (rain, rain, go away...)

Steady rain and 55 degrees greeted the team in Augusta.  Located in the sand hills of eastern Georgia, the team fielded a smaller squad at this “away” race.  Flyers entered four events on their Blue Competition Cycles CX bikes, Panaracer Cross Blaster tires & Neuvation wheels.  Race nutrition was provided by PowerBar, and lodging by Holiday Inn Express.

Oscar Clark scored a fine 5th place in Elites, and was riding in second place when a jammed rear brake forced a 15 second stop.  Meanwhile, two-time collegiate national champion Jed Schneider rode away, leaving two chase groups.  Oscar motored through the second group and made a strong surge to the front but fell a bit short.  Team mate Jafer Beizer finished 12th tailing the main group.

Kyle Cochran won Juniors A with a strong attack at the start, and held on to win by half a lap.  With only a 10 minute rest he was back on the course for Men B, and stayed with the front group for an solid 10th place.  Lamar Mauney tangled with course tape in the opening lap but recovered for 4th in Masters 45+.

Technical Notes:  The course was grass and pavement, with the soil being sandy and loose.  The team rode Panaracer Cross Blasters at 45 pounds of pressure, and the tires were perfect for this course.  Good traction in the wet grass turns and short power hills, and fast on the pavement.   The Blue cross bikes handled perfectly in the tight turns with great damping from the carbon forks.  Our Neuvation wheels handled the bumpy terrain in fine fashion.
